How Elizabeth Hagen Inspired Me to Clean Out My Car!
September 12, 2010

by Jodi Granok - Organizing Magic, LLC

In our society, we often put the needs of others before our own.  I don't know about you, but it is a lot easier for me to do nice things for someone else than to do something nice for myself.

One of my favorite professional organizers is Elizabeth Hagen, who lives in South Dakota.  Elizabeth is a fantastic speaker who teaches people across the country the benefits of organizing, and coaches professional organizers on ways to better serve their ideal clients.

Tomorrow, my St. Louis NAPO Chapter is hosting Elizabeth, who is giving a workshop called "Growing Your Business with Confidence".  I volunteered to drive Elizabeth back to the airport on Tuesday.

Looking at my car, I knew there was work to be done.  I have always kept my car organized, but clean was a different story.  "I really need to vacuum out my car" and "Wow, my car is dusty" are 2 phrases I say to myself far too often.  But for whatever reason, I just wasn't motivated enough to do anything about it.  Yes, here I was, a professional organizer who procrastinated!

Today, my husband and I took a trip out to the driveway and had a cleaning party.  I took some damp rags and wiped out the interior, while my wonderful husband went to town with our Shop-Vac.  For a finishing touch, I added a bit of air-freshener.  My car hasn't looked this good since I bought it 3 years ago!

Peer-pressure is also an effective method for cleaning inspiration.  After helping me clean out my car, my husband decided to clean his as well!

If you have trouble getting inspired to do something beneficial for yourself, why not look to someone or something else for motivation:

  • Want your child to clean her room?  Offer a slumber party as a reward!
  • Need motivation to clean your house?  Invite friends over for a party!
  • Looking for inspiration to clean out your car?  Offer to take someone you admire to the airport!
What activity do you need motivation to do?
