Disaster Plan Week 1 - The Shopping Assignment September 3, 2011

Today, I read the assignment to my husband for Week 1. Each week has a specific shopping list and a to-do list. Here is the shopping list for Week 1:
Grocery Shopping List
- 1 gallon of water (per person)
- 1 gallon of water (per pet)
- 1 jar of peanut butter (per person)
- 1 large can of juice
- 1 hand-operated can opener
- Instant coffee, tea, powdered soft drinks
- Permanent marking pen to mark date on cans and bottled water
- Pet food, diapers, and/or baby food as needed
When I read this list to my husband, he was a bit skeptical. He didn't feel that some of these items were necessary, and he also was concerned that other items, like an emergency kit, were not listed for the first week of shopping.
I explained to him that the whole point of having a 24 week plan was to help people not feel overwhelmed by buying everything in just one week. I believe the creators of the document grouped items together logically and divided assignments up evenly over the 6 month period. My husband still felt compelled to prioritize certain items out of order.
Because he does the household grocery shopping, I decided to give my husband some peace of mind and let him shop a bit out of order of the list, provided that we still complete the requirements for each week to maintain a logical order for my peace of mind!
This is what we decided to purchase this week:
|
|
-
2 gallons of water
- 1 gallon of water for our cat
- 2 jars of peanut butter
1 large can of juice I think this is for calories and vitamins, but we decided to skip it for now.
- 1 hand-operated can opener
Instant coffee, tea, powdered soft drinks We decided to stick with just water for now
Permanent marking pen to mark date on cans and bottled water We already own several.
- Pet food,
diapers, and/or baby food as needed We have one cat and decided to purchase one bag of cat litter and one bag of cat food.
|
Extra Items:
- 1 box of gloves
- 1 emergency kit
These last two items are listed on a future assigned week, but my husband wanted to get them now.
As
for storage, the plan is to put them on a low shelving unit in our
basement. Since our most likely disasters are a tornado or an
earthquake, we feel the items are safest in the basement.
The
idea of the 6 month plan is that when the first 24 weeks are completed,
you start back at Week 1 and begin replenishing the more perishable
items. By writing the expiration dates as well as the purchase dates,
we know what to rotate upstairs to our pantry and when to do it. The
goal is not to buy these items and then pitch them later, but rather
have them in storage until they can be rotated upstairs for consumption,
still prior to expiration.
In our next post: Week 1: The To-Do List.
