Disaster Plan Introduction
September 2, 2011
by Jodi Granok - Organizing Magic, LLC

This past year, I have found myself becoming more concerned about being prepared for a natural disaster.  After hearing first-hand accounts of the tragic earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand from a fellow NAPO colleague, watching the horror of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan, and recently experiencing a bad tornado season here in St. Louis, I decided that I wanted to create a disaster plan for myself and my husband.

The problem is, how does one go about making such a plan?  Every time we tried to think about it, it felt very overwhelming and we didn't know where to start.

And then, fate stepped in.

This past April, I attended the NAPO Annual Conference and attended a fantastic class given by Margaret Lukens, a fellow NAPO colleague who lives in California.  The class was called, "Peace of Mind in the Face of Disaster: Preparing Clients for Any Emergency".

During this class, Margaret mentioned that the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of NAPO had created a "Family Disaster Supplies and Preparedness Calendar", which breaks a comprehensive disaster plan and list of supplies into a 6 month chart with 24 weekly goals.

I thought to myself, "This is it!  A road map to building a disaster plan."  But of course, good intentions do not always lead to action.

And then, Hurricane Irene struck the East coast last week - renewing the interest in having a disaster plan for ourselves.

So here we are.  It is early September, a new school year - and time to make a plan.

I hope you join me as my husband and I do our best to create a disaster plan.  Each week, I will share the weekly assignment laid out in NAPO-SFBA's comprehensive chart, and document our progress throughout the week.

We may not get it all done, we may deviate from the plan, but what's important is that we are doing something.  I invite you, my readers, to work on your own disaster plan alongside us, and I hope you share that progress here on this blog.

Good luck - and stay safe, everyone!
