Emergency Information Resources May 29, 2009by Jodi Granok - Organizing Magic, LLC
It's
important to have emergency information readily available and updated
for each person in your household. Here are a few of my emergency
resource ideas:
- I
keep a laminated emergency information card in my wallet, next to my
driver's license. It lists my name and phone number, the contact
information for my husband, physician, and insurance company. I also
list my food and drug allergies, and my preferred hospital.
- On
my cell phone, I have "ICE" on my list of contacts, which stands for
"In Case of Emergency". My husband's cell phone number is listed there.
Emergency personnel are trained to look for this contact if you are
found unresponsive. I recommend this tip for everyone. Why not add an
"ICE" to your contact list right now!
- Vial of Life
is a FREE resource for emergency information. It is a form you fill
out, listing medical and other important emergency information. The Vial
is kept on your refrigerator door as well as inside your car's glove
compartment. A decal is posted on your front door to indicate to
emergency personnel that you participate in the program.
- If
you have any medical condition that could be life-threatening
(bee-sting allergy, asthma, drug allergy, diabetes, epilepsy, latex
allergy, etc.) I recommend purchasing a MedicAlert product. It allows emergency personnel to access key medical information about you if you are unable to communicate or respond.
The
key to maintaining your emergency information is remembering to update
it! I use Daylight Savings Time to remember mine. Twice a year, when I
change the time on my clocks, I check the batteries in my smoke and
carbon monoxide detectors AND I review my medical information and
emergency contact information to make sure it is current. It's best to
update your information every time you start a new medication or have a
new condition, but using Daylight Savings Time ensures at least 2
updates a year.
