Facebook, Farmville, and Organizing!
May 14, 2010

by Jodi Granok - Organizing Magic, LLC

For the past week, I have been "grounded" at home with a bad bout of pneumonia.  Looking for something sedentary to do, I discovered the game "Farmville" on Facebook.  I quickly discovered that there are valuable organizing lessons to be learned from this experience.  So whether you like Facebook, Farmville, or organizing, here are some tips that can help with some or all of your passions:

1) Facebook group lists are great for sorting friends.  On the right side of the top Facebook bar, click on the drop down menu for "Account" and then click on "Edit Friends".  You will see a list of all your friends, alphabetized by first name.  Click on the tab above that list "Create New List".  Enter a name for your new group, such as "High School Classmates", and then click on the photos of your friends who fall into this group.  When you are finished, click on the "Create List" at the bottom.  Now, when you look at who is on Facebook chat, it will tell you what high school friends are online!

This works really well for those of you who have hundreds of friends.  When dozens of people are online at the same time, it can be overwhelming to search for someone.  The more group lists you have, the easier it is to scan the chat for specific people.  Ideas for group lists are:

  • Childhood/Camp Friends
  • High School Friends
  • College Friends
  • Local Friends
  • Association or Club Group Friends
  • Worship Friends
  • Work Colleagues
2) Make your Facebook games work for you!  On Farmville (and most FB games) the game tells you which of your Facebook friends already play that game, but you still need to send them invitations to join forces with you.  The more people that play a game with you, the more benefits you get!

After sending my Farmville invites, I created 2 group lists: "Farmville Pending" and "Farmville".  When I saw someone on chat in the pending group, I asked them to join me in the game.  Once they did, I moved them to the regular list.  To edit group lists, go back to "Account" and "Edit Friends", then look down the left side of the screen for your lists.  Click on the list you want to edit, and then click "Edit List" at the top.

With my newly organized Farmville list, I can easily find other players who are currently online, making it much easier for me to ask for gifts and other assistance in the game.

3) Grouping like with like makes it easier to find what you need.  In the Farmville game, I lined up all my animals in a pen, and put all my trees together.  It makes harvesting much faster!

Remember - this is a great organizing rule for your real farm, home, and office spaces!  Happy Organizing - and I'll see you on the farm!
