Kitchen Recipe TricksJune 14, 2009by Jodi Granok - Organizing Magic, LLC
When
I first branched out on my own as a young adult, I collected a lot of
recipes. I had a small yellow card box and spent many hours carefully
copying the recipes I liked onto index cards.
Not only was this
system time consuming, it was too frustrating, and so the card box was
abandoned for a stack of loose recipes that were always getting lost or
damaged. I needed a new system!
When I purchased my first laptop
computer, I decided to review all my recipes and keep only my favorites -
the ones I were using and loving, NOT the ones I "hoped to make one
day". I took my smaller, manageable pile of recipes and over a short
period of time (usually while watching television), I typed them into a
word document on my computer. I printed each page and placed them inside
clear sheet protectors in a plastic 3 ring binder, which I keep in the
kitchen.
I love knowing I have all my recipes in one place, and
they are safe from food splatters while I cook! The other advantage to
having my recipes on my computer is that I can e-mail requested recipes
to friends and family quickly and easily.
Not interested in typing up your recipes? One option is to purchase an established recipe holder system, like this one from Recipe Relish.
It keeps your recipes in one location, separated in categories, and you
can store the recipes as is, whatever current form they are in.
The
fastest and cheapest option is to create your own binder. Get some tab
dividers for your food categories (soups, salads, main dishes, etc.) and
then slip your recipes into clear plastic sheet protectors. It doesn't
matter if the recipes are torn out of a magazine, printed off your
computer, or written on an index card. Just slip them in the sheet
protector and file in the appropriate section of your binder.
What is YOUR recipe status?
