Learning How to Let Go January 24, 2011 by Jodi Granok - Organizing Magic, LLC
Winter
is a busy season for us Professional Organizers. Being stuck in the
house during these cold winter months makes people more aware of their
clutter and motivates them to work on getting organized.
When
I meet new clients, they have gotten to the point where they are tired
of all the clutter and ready to make a positive change. The stumbling
block that has held them back from being organized is the inability to
make decisions. I explain to them that clutter is the visual
representation of what happens when you can't make a decision.
The first thing I ask clients is "What do you want this space to look like?" Having a vision of what you want the end of the organizing process to look like makes it a lot easier to get through those first steps in the beginning of the organizing process.
Here are three "magical" mantras I use with clients to help them learn how to let go of clutter in their homes:
- Your home is a place to house the things that you love using and
enjoy seeing, NOT things that you feel obligated to keep or hope to use
"someday".
- Find the "treasures", and let the rest go.
- If everything is special, then nothing is special.
Using
these mantras and keeping the vision in mind as the end goal are often
the turning points to giving items in the home a fresh look. Clients
are able to see that there is a difference between valued items and
clutter. Once the clutter is removed, the valued items are able to be
found, displayed, used, and loved.
