Mother's Day and Photo Organization May 7, 2009 by Jodi Granok - Organizing Magic, LLC
Welcome to my blog! I am excited to share my passion for organizing with you.
Last week, I traveled to Orlando, Florida to attend my second conference for NAPO (National Association of Professional Organizers). I had a great time connecting with my fellow organizers from St. Louis and around the country.
Mother's
Day is rapidly approaching, and my thoughts turn to photo albums and
scrapbooking. I have found that photographs are so rewarding to share,
but the potential for clutter is overwhelming!
I recently
organized my family's photographs, which spanned a period of over 20
years! It took some time, but the results were worth it. I had 3 paper
shopping bags full of loose photographs. Scary!
The first thing I
did was to take one bag at a time and sort the photos into broad
categories. I started with decades and vacations. As I sorted, I
discarded all of the duplicate photos as well as the ones that were out
of focus, blurry, or unflattering.
Once I had my broad
categories, I looked for themes, such as a specific trip or occasion.
Although I strive for accurate chronology, I knew without prior labeling
of these photos, I would have to accept "close, but not perfect" as my
new mantra. Letting go of my perfectionism was key in finishing this
project!
I now have several beautiful albums that chronicle my
family's early years as well as some of our favorite trips. I realize
that in order to maintain my photo organization, I need to put new
photos in albums right away, or at least label when and where the photos
were taken.
Another option for conquering photograph clutter is to convert old photos into digital media. I am a big fan of Scan Digital.
I look forward to hearing from you - let me know about your photo challenges and success stories!
