Students - Get Organized for the New Semester! (Part 3)
January 9, 2010
by Jodi Granok - Organizing Magic, LLC

Oh, my aching back(pack)!

Okay students, now that you have organized your school papers and know which ones to leave at home, let's talk about your backpack.

There are 2 functions for a school backpack:

1) Take stuff from your house to your school locker
2) Bring stuff from school to your house

That's it!

Therefore, the contents of your backpack should be simple.  But for many students, it is like journeying into a dark cave of scary, smelly things.  For those of you who like a bit of an adventure, let's clear some space on the floor (you might want to throw down a beach towel first) and dump it out.

Okay - now, let's make some piles.  Put your school books, folders, and binders in one pile.  Loose pieces of paper?  If you have been reading my blog, you shouldn't have any of those!  Now, look for trash - you know, empty gum wrappers, your leftover lunch from last week (eew!) ticket stubs, things like that.

Group whatever you have left.  For example - put all your makeup and hair care products together.  Put all your electronic equipment together.  Put all your money together (if you are lucky enough to find some!)

Here's the deal.  Use the spaces in your backpack to match the size of what you are transporting.  School books and supplies go in the largest part of your backpack.  Extra makeup goes in a smaller section.  But first, you might want to put it all in a small mesh bag like these from The Container Store.

You can use these type of bags or pouches for your other collections, like pens and pencils.  That way, you don't have to dig for what you need, just grab the right bag!

Here is one more bag that I think is really cool.  A lunch bag made by BUILT.  Check it out:  This is lunch bag made out of neoprene, the same material they use for wet suits.  It only takes up the size space of the food you put in it, and it will keep things hot or cold, depending on what you brought.

Your Organizing Homework:  Spend some time this weekend organizing your backpack - your back will thank you for it!
