Even My Fireworks Are Organized!
July 4, 2009
by Jodi Granok - Organizing Magic, LLC

People ask me all the time, "How did you come to be a professional organizer? Were you always organized, or was it a learned skill?"

I usually respond by saying that I haven't always been organized in everything I do; some things were learned, others seemed to be innate.

With today being July 4th, our patriotic holiday (my favorite holiday!), my thoughts turn to previous July 4th celebrations. I have always enjoyed our family's tradition of having an elaborate BBQ dinner with family and friends, the incredible fireworks display my father would set off (when we had a big front yard), and staying up until the wee hours of the morning playing Beyond Balderdash.

The last few years that my parents lived in their old house, I was responsible for purchasing the fireworks here in Missouri (where they have a better selection). My friend Amy and I decided that since I was buying the fireworks, we should keep track of what we liked and what were duds. So there we were, sitting outside on the deck, watching fireworks with a mini flashlight, pen and paper, writing down the name of each firework and the crowd reaction. For my fireworks buying readers out there, 4 of our favorites are: Party Time, American Wave, Hostile Takeover, and Sneak Preview.

Needless to say for those who know me, I created a spreadsheet on my computer, listing each firework, what type of display it made, and whether we should buy it again or avoid it. I was organizing our fireworks celebration!

Unfortunately, our fireworks parties have been suspended for a few years, as my parents now live in a house with a small yard, and my brother and I each live in separate cities with our own families. I hope one day we can all get together again and have fireworks. Just in case we do - I still have my fireworks chart ready to go!
