Organize for Your Vacation
By Jodi Granok
We all look forward to our vacations - but preparing for a trip can be very stressful. Follow these steps and relax, before you even leave town!
1) Plan ahead - For best results, make plans for your trip at least one month ahead of time. Keep in mind that travel to popular destinations during peak periods (winter and spring breaks, summer months) may require a reservation several months in advance in order to be successful.
2) Consider trip and travel insurance - If you or your trip companions are in frail health or have a chronic medical condition, if you are traveling with a baby, taking a charter flight, tour or cruise, or traveling to a country where there is the potential for political unrest or terrorism, trip insurance is a wise decision. Illness, injuries, and accidents can happen to anyone, at any time, anywhere. Purchasing travel insurance provides an extra layer of protection against the unexpected! 3) Put your papers in order - Make two copies of all of your travel documents (passport, tickets, traveler's check receipts, travel itinerary, etc.). Keep one copy in your checked luggage, and one at home with someone you trust. Consider leaving a copy of your will, insurance papers, and power of attorney with a friend or family member.
4) Make a packing list - Write down everything you are taking on your trip, such as clothing, medication, snacks, makeup, cell phone and charger, etc. This helps prevent you from forgetting items at home. Bring the list with you to ensure that you bring everything back home. If you forget an item, write it on the list. If you didn't need an item, write that on the list as well. When you arrive home, revise your list so that you are prepared for your next trip.
5) Pack light, pack smart - It is better to bring fewer items and carry more cash as a backup plan. Only pack what you know you need. Pack clothing items that you can mix and match. Bring a sweater and a light jacket instead of a heavy coat. Wear your bulkiest clothing and shoes on travel days. Make sure to carry a change of clothes, toiletries, and medications in your carry-on luggage, in case your checked bags are lost.
6) Paper and plastic - Put tissue paper between layers of folded clothing in your luggage to minimize wrinkles. Place items that might leak in resealable plastic storage bags. Bring plastic bags in your luggage to separate dirty clothes from clean clothes as you travel.
7) Take care of your house - Pre-pay your bills before leaving town. Another option is to set up your paycheck for direct deposit and sign up with your bank to pay bills online. Ask someone to collect your newspapers and mail, or put a temporary hold on these items. Place your pets in a kennel or arrange for someone to feed and walk them. Adjust your thermostat by 5 degrees to save on your heating or cooling bill. Use staggered timers on selected lights throughout the house to give the impression that you are still at home.
