Organize for Winter
By Jodi Granok
With the weather outside getting colder, now is the time to stay indoors and tackle some organizing projects. Here are 9 tips to get you started:
1) January is the best time to buy discounted holiday cards, wrapping paper, and seasonal decorations. When you take down your current decorations, store items in a labeled, airtight bin to make it easy to retrieve next year. For more holiday tips, click here.
2) If you live in a cold climate take advantage of the below freezing temperatures and defrost your freezer! Stash your frozen foods on the back porch while you clean.
3) If you have a green thumb, give your indoor plants extra water. Running the heater inside your home dries out plants faster than usual.
4) E-Organize! Go through your e-mails and delete what you don't need. Does your e-mail inbox contain more than 20 messages? Create subfolders to categorize messages that you still want or need, such as a recipe folder or a newsletter folder. Save your inbox for items that require an action.
5) Get caught up on your hobby projects before starting any new ones. Winter is an ideal time to knit, needlepoint, scrapbook, read, and work in the shed.
6) Review the paperwork you have in your filing cabinets. Shred and/or recycle unneeded and outdated material. Note: Always check with your accountant or attorney about how long to keep your documents.
7) Get a head start on filing your income taxes. Start your tax preparation in January when W2 forms arrive in the mail. If you owe money, you can always wait until the spring to file - but at least the paperwork will be finished!
8) Begin collecting information on vacation destinations if you are planning a family summer trip. Take the time now to look for different places to visit along the way, and turn your usual route into a new adventure!
9) Pick one area to organize each weekend, and make it a family project. Take advantage of staying indoors by organizing your pantry, closets, cabinets, playrooms, and so much more. Not sure where or how to begin? Visit my website to learn how I can help you get organized!
Stay warm, and have a safe and joyous holiday season!
